This product is acceptable for the price, but be aware that it is not ready to go upon delivery. First of all, this board is made of imported rubberwood. As a hardwood it’s purportedly non-toxic based on my brief internet research, but many sources also caution that if you’re concerned about latex allergies you may still wish to consider a different material. The piece is unfinished and barely prepped, and mine arrived unsealed and spotted with grime in several places. I’m using it to store small appliances, and I’m not planning to ever prep food on it - if I were, I’d have possibly asked for an exchange. The surface was also rough and covered in loose, ratty wood fibers. After washing off the stains, I had to sand all surfaces, edges, and corners through various grits to eliminate the fibrous surface and remove dangerous splinters. I’m unaware if I have any wood or latex sensitivities, but I found myself sneezing for a while after finishing the sanding. The wood also smelled mildly unpleasant while being worked. You may wish to reserve some sawdust to mix with wood glue and fill in any gaps in the finger joints as well. If food particles or water make their way in there, it could cause problems. Finally I treated the board with a healthy dose of mineral oil, as rubberwood is susceptible to mold, mildew, and rot if left untreated. If you’re not terribly concerned with how sanitary this piece is when it arrives, and if you’re willing to put in a bit of time and effort to sand and finish the wood, in my opinion the price for this hardwood surface is fairly reasonable given the price of lumber right now. If you’re a competent woodworker, consider crafting one of these in your own spare time rather than spending an afternoon making this one safe and usable. It won’t cost more if you start from scratch, and anything you make will last longer, fit better, and look more attractive.

The shelf boards are beautiful and seem like good quality, but unfortunately are not cut to fit any of the 36” x 14” wire shelving units I own. These are very heavy solid wood boards and not really practical to return. Not to mention the 20% or so restocking fee. In the past I have purchased ten similar boards with the same measurements, and those boards all fit perfectly. I really like the look and functionality of my wire shelves with shelf boards on top. If I’m unable to modify the ones I purchased here I unfortunately will have to buy my next ones from a different vendor.

All wood products should be hand washed. The heat and chemicals of a dishwasher are harmful to wood’s naturally porous texture. If your board begins to show signs of wear, its finish can be restored with a food safe mineral oil or wood conditioner. First, clean and dry the board. Then, apply a thin coating with a soft cloth or paper towel. Once the conditioner has soaked into the board, buff off any excess with a clean cloth. Having excess conditioner on a wood cutting board will make it feel sticky or oily. Be sure to dry it completely before storage to prevent mold.
